ELVIS - “HEARTBREAK HOTEL”
He hasn’t heard the applause yet.
In 1954, at Sun Studio in Memphis, a 19-year-old truck driver named Elvis Presley stepped up to a
microphone and changed the sound of popular music—without knowing he was doing it. Blending
gospel, blues, country, and rhythm & blues into something raw and unfiltered, he created a sound that
didn’t fit the mold—and in doing so, broke it. What followed would make him a global icon.
But in “THAT” moment...
It was just a voice, a feeling, and a spark. The Spark. Nothing before... nothing after... just that moment
where something new enters the world and he doesn’t even know what it is yet. As Sun Records owner
Sam Phillips said: “Perfect Imperfect” - that’s the “sound”.
Pure- Unstable- full of promise. Without this moment, there’s no “ELVIS”- no Rock & Roll explosion - no
cultural shift... Here’s the beautiful truth: we know what happens later, but he didn’t, and that’s what
makes this moment electric. I wanted the viewer to feel the innocence, the raw energy & power, and the
discovery. Not the consequence and decline. If you have viewed my other pieces, you’ll notice the style
is a little more loose; a little more “perfect imperfect”. Usually my script is tightly & neatly done. Here, I
wanted to illustrate the raw energy and spontaneous combustion that was Elvis at this time. Pure, but
not polished.
The “Heartbreak Hotel” line isn’t just a song anymore- it becomes a metaphor. This piece isn’t about the
“Hotel”, it’s about the kid who hasn’t checked in yet. He hasn’t met the “machine” yet- No Colonel- No
RCA polish- No Vegas - no jumpsuit. This is Tupelo Miss., Sun Studios, and a kid with a guitar and a sound
no one expected. This is not “ELVIS PRESLEY”. This is a young man just discovering what just came out of
his body. This is that short moment in time before history notices; because once he becomes “The King”;
he’s already changed. From a distance, you’ll see the iconic Elvis performance face. Up close you’ll
discover the younger Elvis- the roots- the rise- the costs.
“Inside” Heartbreak Hotel :
Out of his mouth: “You Ain’t Nothing but a Hound Dog”, “Love Me Tender & “Don’t Be Cruel”
“Mama” & Home are in his eyes as he rides “The Mystery Train”. His ear is full of his influences Gospel,
Rockabilly, Bluegrass, and Rock & Roll. On his forehead, in his mind, is his” Dream”
Elvis Highlights: over 500 million records sold - 150+ singles- 18 # 1’s- over 60 albums- 3 Grammy Awards
- Lifetime Achievement Award- Inaugural Rock & Roll Hall of Fame- Country Music Hall of Fame- Gospel
Hall of Fame & Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
